The Chief Building Inspector heads the Inspections Department which accepts all applications for property rezoning, variances and building permits. The Department coordinates review of site plans, architectural plans and civil drawings and performs property inspections. Certificates of Occupancy and inspections associated with issuance of occupational tax permits are also among the responsibilities of the Inspections Department.

The Secretary of the Planning Commission and the Board of Zoning Appeals works in the Inspections Department located in city hall. This position is responsible for accepting applications for a wide variety of matters decided by these appointed boards. Minutes of the proceedings and the agendas of these boards are available from the Secretary and are posted on this site. The City's zoning ordinance is available at no cost at municode.com,hard copies are available at the Inspections Department at a cost of $38.50.

The City Clerk coordinates public hearings held by the Mayor and City Council. She is responsible for advertising the hearings on property rezoning and revisions to the zoning ordinance. The City Clerk also maintains the "Official Zoning Map" that is available for viewing in her office at city hall. Unofficial copies are available for purchase from the Engineering Department also at city hall at a cost of $5.00.

The City Planner processes applications for property rezonings, variances, appeals and other approvals impacting property owners and business operators. Zoning and other applications are available on this site and at the Inspections Department. FAQs are posted on this site and are designed to answer typical questions raised by applicants related to these approvals. The Planner makes a recommendation to Planning Commission, the Board of Zoning Appeals and the Mayor and City Council as concerns applications. He is available to answer questions and assist in completing applications.

The Planner also certifies compliance of the use of property with the zoning ordinance. This certification is required prior to the Inspections Department conducting an inspection of the premises and must be obtained prior to issuance of occupational tax permits. The City Planner also processes sign permits which are required prior to installation of any sign.

Auto broker's licenses are issued by the City Planner. The City does not allow on site auto sales except in conjunction with a new car dealership. Finally, "Certificates of Zoning Compliance" are issued by the Planner. The application form explains the applicant responsibilities in obtaining these certificates. Purchasers or tenants should not sign a purchase contract or lease agreement prior to seeking such a certificate. The cost of these certificates is $25.00 payable to the City of College Park.
